About the CFMS
The CFMS is an organization representing over 8,000 medical students from 15 Canadian medical student societies from coast to coast. We represent medical students to the public, to the federal government, and to national and international medical organizations. The CFMS is saddened by the recent tragic deaths of 8 people in Atlanta, including 6 women of Asian descent. Their deaths come amidst rising anti-Asian racism in communities across the continent during the COVID-19 pandemic and are a reminder of the burden of intersectionality and sexism. Although we have seen a substantial increase in anti-Asian racism recently, we recognize that this is only an exacerbation of longstanding systemic racism in society.
During these difficult times, we stand in solidarity with our membership, particularly those who identify as Asian and women, and encourage you to reach out to your supports. We condemn all forms of discrimination and remain committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusivity at all levels of the organization.
This past year has highlighted the effects of structural racism on numerous marginalized groups and we must all work together to call out racism and create safe spaces within the medical profession and society at large for all. This will require actionable steps as individuals as well as a community and we are committed to walking forward on this journey.
